Mechanism of action:

  • Binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome and inhibits protein synthesis.

Use:

  • Broad-spectrum antibiotic used for a variety of infections such as acne, urinary tract infections, chlamydia, and gonorrhea.

Side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal upset, dizziness, photosensitivity, tooth discoloration in children, and potential toxicity in pregnancy.

Example:

  • Generic drug used for a variety of infections.
