Mechanism of Action:
Tolazoline is a non-selective alpha-adrenergic antagonist. It works by blocking alpha-adrenergic receptors, leading to vasodilation and a decrease in blood pressure. It also has some stimulant effects on the heart.
Uses:
It is used primarily to reverse the effects of medications that increase blood pressure and to treat certain types of heart failure in newborns (persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn).
Side Effects:
Side effects can include headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and a rapid heart rate. In some cases, it may also cause a drop in blood pressure or arrhythmias.
