Preparation
Zinc sulphate can be prepared by reacting zinc metal, zinc oxide, or zinc carbonate with sulfuric acid:
Using zinc metal: Zn + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + H2
Using zinc oxide: ZnO + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + H2O
Using zinc carbonate: ZnCO3 + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + CO2 + H2O
Properties
A white, odorless, crystalline powder.
Soluble in water.
Commonly found as a heptahydrate (ZnSO₄·7H₂O), known as white vitriol.
Uses
Astringent: Used in lotions, eye drops, and creams.
Dietary Supplement: Treats zinc deficiency.
Agriculture: Used as a fertilizer to correct zinc-deficient soils.
Industrial Use: In the production of paints, inks, and other products.
Storage of Zinc Sulphate
Store in a cool, dry place, away from heat, moisture, and incompatible materials.
Keep in a tightly closed container to avoid contact with water and air.
