Activated Charcoal

Preparation

  • Activated Charcoal Prepared by heating carbon-rich materials (wood, peat, coconut shells, sawdust) in the presence of a gas (steam or carbon dioxide) at high temperatures.

  • This process increases the surface area and porosity of the material.

Properties

  • Fine, black, odorless powder.

  • Has a large surface area and highly adsorptive properties.

Uses

  1. Emergency Treatment: Used for poisoning and drug overdoses by adsorbing toxic substances and reducing gastrointestinal absorption.

  2. Water Purification and Air Filtration: Removes impurities and contaminants.

  3. Cosmetic and Personal Care: Used in face masks, toothpaste, and deodorants.

Storage of Activated Charcoal

  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from heat, moisture, and sunlight.

  • Keep in a tightly closed container.
