Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers Class 12 notes are easier to revise when you connect each structure with its properties and reactions. Use the chapter PDFs below, then test yourself with a few short questions.
Open your notes and PDFs
What to revise first
- Identify the group: alcohols have an –OH group attached to a saturated carbon; phenols have –OH attached directly to an aromatic ring. Ethers contain a C–O–C linkage.
- Compare properties: revise hydrogen bonding, boiling points and the acidity of phenols and alcohols.
- Practise reactions: organise preparation, oxidation, dehydration and ether cleavage in a reaction map. Add the reagents and conditions from your textbook.
Quick practice questions
- Why is phenol more acidic than ethanol?
- How would you distinguish primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols from their structures?
- What is Williamson ether synthesis, and what limits its use?
Try the questions before opening the solutions PDF. Finish by writing one conversion from memory and checking each step against your notes.
