Mechanism of Action

  • Inhibits lanosterol 14α-demethylase, preventing ergosterol synthesis.

Uses of Itraconazole

  • Systemic fungal infections (Histoplasmosis, Aspergillosis, Candidiasis, Blastomycosis).
  • Onychomycosis (fungal nail infections).

Side Effects

  • Hepatotoxicity, GI upset, headache.
  • Heart failure risk (black box warning: negative inotropic effects).
