Zalcitabine (ddC)

Mechanism of Action

  • Phosphorylated into Zalcitabine triphosphate, which inhibits HIV reverse transcriptase and leads to chain termination.

Uses of Zalcitabine (ddC)

  • HIV/AIDS therapy (HAART regimen, rarely used now).

Side Effects

  • Peripheral neuropathy (most common).
  • Lactic acidosis, pancreatitis.
  • Mouth ulcers, hepatotoxicity.
